College basketball is currently past midseason as the NCAA is trying to survive the season through the pandemic.
The college basketball season started in late November, when it usually starts in early November, so not a huge change but this season as a whole has been very different.
One huge difference this year is when you look at the AP poll. For the first time since 1961, Duke, North Carolina, and Kentucky are all currently unranked. This is special because it shows how weird this season is. It’s different to see Alabama and Baylor in the top 10, but not Duke and Kentucky. And in a sport that thrives off its fan bases of rowdy college students, most games are being played with no one in attendance.
However, this season has also been one of the more steadier seasons, even though Duke, Kentucky and UNC aren’t ranked, Gonzaga has been the number one ranked team the whole season. Baylor has been the number two ranked team, and Villanova has been the number three ranked team. This kind of pattern almost never happens, and it will be very interesting to keep an eye on those teams during March Madness.
March Madness appears to be back on after it was cancelled last year during the pandemic. This year the highly anticipated tournament will be entirely located in Indianapolis due to COVID-19. I, along with many other fans, are happy college basketball is able to play this season safely so far, and can’t wait for the return of March Madness.
