2020. Much of the discourse surrounding this year will be around the many negative events that took place. However, this year was also a very prosperous one for the music industry, with the usual haul of hit songs and albums that come along every year.

The end of the year means that many publications are releasing their year end critic’s bests lists in various mediums, including music, so just as we did last year, The Paw Print held a poll asking Irvington students to give their opinions on the best that this year had to offer in music, and here are the results.

Song of the Year

The battle for song of the year was close, but in the end, Irvington chose Roddy Ricch’s “The Box” for the song of the year. Hot on its heels, and tying for second, were The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” and Future’s “Life is Good”, featuring Drake. Fourth place was a three-way tie between Billie Eilish’s “everything i wanted”, Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage”, featuring Beyoncé, and Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now”. Finally, DaBaby’s “ROCKSTAR”, featuring Roddy Ricch, finished seventh.

Album of the Year

The voting for album of the year was also relatively close, and in the end, Irvington respondents went with Taylor Swift’s “folklore” as the album of the year. Right behind it was the late Juice WRLD’s “Legends Never Die”, with The Weeknd’s “After Hours” finishing third. Behind them were Lil Uzi Vert’s “Eternal Atake” in fourth, and Roddy Ricch’s “Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial” in fifth.

Artist of the Year

In a considerably less close result, The Weeknd ranked as Irvington’s top artist of the year. DaBaby finished second in the poll, while Post Malone and Roddy Ricch tied for third. Drake finished in fifth, while Lil Baby came in sixth.

Top Genre

Irvington’s taste in genre also varied a fair bit, but for the second straight year, hip-hop came out on top. Pop finished in second, with rock in third, and dance music finishing in fourth.

Once again, it seems as though Irvington’s tastes seem to be quite varied from person to person. But given that this year was quite a varied one for music, that’s a pretty good representation of this year in music as a whole.
