Conservatism Goes Camp: Nicki Minaj and the Trump Administration

By Maya Calabrese

In the 2010s, Nicki Minaj became a cultural phenomenon. With her hyperpop personal style and genre-hybridity, Minaj quickly became a staple to the era’s musical identity. Her popularity particularly touched the alternative community, with lyrics combating the Trump administration and many conservative politicians’ views. But in Trump’s recent term, Minaj has shown rampant support for his administration.

On October 25, 2026, Nicki Minaj appeared at a rally supporting Donald Trump in Port Huron, Michigan. She spoke in support of Republican candidates across the United States that were running in the midterm elections. Minaj also showed her disapproval of the transgender community, and stated that she did not support transitional surgeries.

When Minaj disapproved of Trump’s politics, she included a line in her song Black Barbies, “Island girl, Donald Trump want me go home,” highlighting unrest towards unjust immigration policies and emphasizing that she herself is an immigrant. This makes her support of Trump all the more shocking, as his administration has resulted in the displacement of immigrant families and extreme violence from ICE.

Minaj once posted on Facebook in 2018, saying that she came to the United States as an immigrant, and she was terrified of all that the government was doing to separate families because of their immigration status. As of 2025, she regularly posts positive comments about Trump’s presidency, and discusses the Republicans that she votes for in many of her song lyrics, despite their efforts to deport immigrants. She began her October 25th speech repeatedly chanting “We Love Trump”.

Many fans of Minaj were upset at the transition of her art and style as she grew more supportive of Trump, as she lost her once dramatic look, including her usual fake eyelashes and extravagant makeup. Minaj was one of the first popular female rappers, meaning she opened the way for other women to join the field, and created a community of fans that included people of color and people in the queer community. Many fans are shocked at her new stance in politics, as Trump has expressed extreme hate towards LGBTQ+ groups – many of whom comprised Minaj’s fanbase.
