On September 29th, racial and religious slurs were found in the boys bathroom adjacent to the Maher Gym, according to an email communication from Principal Hirsch.
The slurs were carved into the paper towel dispenser, visible for all to see. The school was quick to close down the bathroom in order to replace the dispenser and prevent any more students from seeing the slurs. It is unknown how many students saw the paper towel dispenser prior to the closure of the bathroom.
The slurs were discovered by an Irvington coach who immediately reported it to the IHS administration.
In an email sent out addressing the incident, Principal Hirsch said that the district contacted the Irvington Police Department and have launched an investigation.
“When we see or hear something that threatens the safety, dignity, or sense of belonging of members of our community, we need to say something,” Mr. Hirsch wrote in the email.
