Irvington’s Varsity Girls Tennis Team is led by a doubles pairing with a unique layer of chemistry, as sisters Anya and Marina Foley are currently undefeated. They are getting closer to sectionals with each win.
Anya, the older of the two, said, “It’s been a really great experience as a senior. After losing my partner last year because she graduated, it’s just been really fun to have this new experience and get to spend this last tennis season with my sister.”
Gina Maher, the Varsity Girls Tennis Coach, said, “I think it’s very special they get to play together, and they are a great doubles team.”
Their first unofficial game took place on the first day of school. They lost to Bronxville, pushing them to practice harder before their first official game.
Marina said, “We were able to use how we were playing and the reasons we lost. This helped us during practice since we knew what we had to work on to play better in the future.”
During their more recent games, their ability to encourage each other during their matches and communicate has really helped them. As they continue through the season, they look forward to their homecoming game against Dobbs.
Anya said, “I think it’s going to be really fun, especially since hopefully we’ll have a good crowd there, which will really test our ability to play under pressure.”
They also hope to make it to sectionals.
Marina said, “It’s obviously something that’s very unique and not a lot of people get to do, and also since Anya is a captain it is fun to see how she leads the team.”
Outside of Anya and Marina, Coach Maher called the team, “a wonderful group of girls.” Her goals are “to keep working hard, and by the end of the season to be better than when we started.”
