JJ McCarthy’s Challenging Season

by John Salvatore

Minnesota Vikings quarterback JJ McCarthy has faced a challenging 2025 NFL season marked by injuries and inconsistency.

The 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft missed his entire rookie season after undergoing a knee surgery, delaying his development and setting back expectations for his future. In 2025, McCarthy again battled health setbacks, including a high ankle sprain and a concussion that forced him out of multiple games.

In his time healthy, JJ McCarthy has been one of the NFL’s most inconsistent quarterbacks, struggling with turnovers and shaky accuracy all season. His inability to find rhythm with the offense led to one of the league’s weakest pass attacks, raising doubts about his readiness and long-term potential.

This lack of offensive production resulted in a four game losing streak, punctuated by a shut out loss.

Despite this, McCarthy delivered a career best outing against the Washington Commanders. He completed 16 of 23 passes for 163 yards and three touchdowns with no turnovers, marking his first turnover-free game of the season and snapping Minnesota’s losing streak.

Despite the breakthrough, McCarthy’s overall numbers still reflect growing pains, with turnovers and missed time. McCarthy’s ability to build on this momentum could determine the franchise’s long-term decision at the quarterback position.
