Zootopia 2 hit the screens on November 26 to positive reviews from fans and critics. Not even a month in theaters, the movie has already racked up over $915 million! It follows Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, where we left them in Zootopia, now both rookie police officers.
Throughout the movie, Judy and Nick uncover the truth about the building of Zootopia’s weatherwall, a device that allows for multiple climates throughout the city.
Though Zootopia 2 is a kids movie, hard-hitting themes of indigenous displacement, prejudice, and gentrification transcend the screen.
The reptiles, indigenous to Reptile Ravine, lose their homes after the wealthy and elite Lynxs of Zootopia bury their home in ice to pave way for the expansion of Tundratown. The reptiles are framed as monsters for murdering a turtle, and are subsequently forgotten and banished from the city.
Gabriela Vukelj, Junior, said, “I think that Zootopia 2 was better than Zootopia as it had a better plot and it created a sense of anticipation throughout the whole movie.”
Personally, I thought this movie was a superb sequel to the original Academy Award winning Zootopia. It was able to keep fun light-hearted energy while diving deeper into real world themes.
Junior Dahlia Anenberg said, “The plot was amazing, and I loved the dynamic between Judy and Nick. It was such a fun movie!”
The post-credit scenes hinted at a potential third installment with a feather floating down and landing on Judy Hopps’ prized carrot pen.
