It is this time of year when everybody is excited to finally go on break. The holiday break allows students to relax and recharge from school for a beloved two weeks. However, many students have countless tests scheduled in this final week as teachers seek to assess student understandings before the break’s brain drain sets in.
Many students dislike the fact that they have to take tests before their break; however, I believe that, for the sake of order, testing is necessary up until the last day.
First off, it is way better to have a lot of tests the week before break rather than have some tests after break. The time off is meant for students to relax with family, not deal with obsessive studying that would interrupt the festivities. The holiday break is a good reset, and one that shouldn’t be trampled.
A potential interruption from studying would only be amplified for students whose families have planned trips this break. When students are on vacation, their time is more limited. For instance, a student might have to not join his family out for dinner one night or potentially miss an exciting event on vacation.
Junior Ilan Edo said, “I value my time on vacation a lot. If there were tests the week after break, it would just be annoying since I would have to take out time during my vacation to study.”
The next reason is that when students go on break, they tend not to focus on school and could forget some information over break. Moreover, directly after a break, an opportunity to have foggy concepts reexplained in class might not come.
“When I am on holiday break, I tend to forget a lot of material I learned because I am not focusing on school,” said Junior Jacob Trencher.
Ultimately, for the sake of creating the most rewarding and nourishing break, it is necessary for the student body to bear the cost of tests now.
