The Irvington Varsity Wrestling Team are gearing up for a brand-new wrestling season for this year after starting practice on November 17th. The team has already jumped into stretching routines, learning and improving wrestling techniques, and doing conditioning to build strength and stamina before matches begin.
This year brings a big shift for the team, as two major seniors last season – Samuel Andrade and Jack Van der Spuy – have graduated. Their leadership and presence on the mat were hugely influential, but hopefully new wrestlers on the team will step up to the plate and dominate this season, bringing passion and commitment.
Among the returning athletes, senior Jack Daly is expected to take on a bigger leadership role. Junior Ronan Kelly would also be there to be superior on the mat, and sophomore Dario Gryka continues to show improvement as he is entering his 2nd year with the team.
New wrestlers are already feeling positive about the season. Freshman Dylan Barger, when interviewed about practicing, said, “I’ve really been liking the wrestling season. It’s been really fun. It’s only been two days, but right now, I’m having a blast.” When asked about the coaching staff and teammates, he added, “I think the coaches are really nice. The teammates are really helping me improve and get better.”, highlighting the chemistry of this wrestling team.
This season, teams to look out for on Irvington’s schedule are Dobbs Ferry, Sleepy Hollow, and Hastings, all of which bring tough competition to Irvington.
The Bulldogs are coached by Coach Ryan Duffy and Coach Edgar Solis, who keep practices focused on discipline, skill-building, and steady improvement.
Even with the loss of key seniors, the Irvington Varsity Wrestling Team is entering the season with energy, developing talent, and a strong work ethic, prepared to take on whatever challenges the year brings.
