The JCC is a community center for social, educational, and cultural activities which houses a gym, after-school programs, and pools. As winter is approaching and fall sports have concluded, the JCC has been packed with people seeking new activities to keep them active and busy.
For the past 2-3 months, students have worked hard in their school sports, practicing almost every day after school and striving to achieve their goals. These students who would usually be practicing are now working out or preparing for the next season of sports at the JCC.
Lucas Constantine, a sophomore at Irvington High School explained how “since baseball does not start until the spring, I have time to go with my friends to the JCC.”
However, many students have gained concern about the popularity of the JCC, and how it has become too crowded to work out. In the gym space, people surround gym equipment, sometimes even in groups, making some machines unattainable for 10-15 minutes at a time.
“Compared to the summer, the gym has been almost impossible to workout in due to the large crowds,” noted Wyatt Cloutman, a sophomore at Irvington High School.
Even with these complaints, the JCC continues to allow people to interact with each other, exercise, and meet new people. Especially this year, more new people are being introduced into the gym and finding a new community to associate themselves with.
Apart from just the gym, many students have been utilizing the JCC’s basketball courts. While some students play with their friends for casual exercise purposes, many students have used to the courts to practice for the school basketball tryouts which began on Monday, November 17th and end this Wednesday, November 19th.
“In the past two weeks, I have been practicing way more than I usually would because I need to be certain I can make the team,” said Samuel Lee, a sophomore at Irvington High School.
In both the gym and the basketball courts, the JCC has witnessed an Irvington takeover, as plenty of students have been spending their after-school hours working out or preparing for their winter sports.
