Exploring Post Grad Options: Trade School vs College

By Jarrett Ourman

As trade schools start to gain more attention people wonder what is more beneficial to their future careers, trade schools or the traditional college route. Trade schools focus on training for specific careers at a cheaper price and can still lead to high salary jobs, while a college education offers a more broad education leading to more flexibility in choosing a career but at a higher cost.

These two options may have many differences, however, they focus on the similar goal which is to help their student find success. Graduates from both of these systems receive diplomas or degrees to show their competency in a certain field.

Although both have tuition trade schools are often cheaper than the regular college. For example an average tuition for trade school ranges from $5,000 – $15,000 total, while the average college tuition ranges from $11,374 – $44, 961.

More differences include the size of schools and classrooms. The trade schools are smaller and have more personal skill training based on specific careers. This differs from larger colleges which offer a variety of courses to give their students more flexibility in future careers. Another difference between these two is their length. Trade schools are typically 6 months to 2 year systems while college is often 2-4 years.

The main reason people tend to go to the traditional college is because they want time to learn more about their academic interests. During this period you don’t necessarily have to know how you’ll implement your education post grad. Rather many explore a balance between academic depth and a wide spanning curriculum during these formative years.

This is very different from trade schools as they require you to choose the career you want to pursue right out of high school. The benefit of this is that you will get paid sooner and can still make lots of money in the fields like plumbing, electricians, and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning).

Therefore, if you come out of high school knowing what you want to do for many years of your life or you can’t afford college, trade school is a great route which can still pay very well and save you both time and money.
