Today, artificial intelligence is becoming an everyday tool for students. Accordingly, teachers are turning to AI detectors to safeguard academic integrity. With software like ChatGPT and other writing assistive technologies becoming increasingly accessible to students, educators face a new challenge. They must distinguish between authentic student work and AI-generated assignments.
To address this struggle, teachers have begun incorporating AI detection into their grading process. This software is a resource for teachers to scan essays, research papers, and short responses for signs of machine-generated writing. AI detectors highlight unusual linguistic patterns, improper vocabulary, and lack of personal voice.
AI detectors could be used as a necessary tool to prevent cheating and to uphold fairness for the students who complete their work honestly. However, the technology is not perfect. False positives can occur, flagging student’s work who use elaborate diction or unconventional grammatical structures as AI generated. This raises concerns about trust and accuracy.
To prevent wrongful accusations teachers must be cautious with this new technology and how they apply it. Conferring with students before accusations potentially fray student-teacher relations can give students a chance to fess up or explain themselves. Working through their logic and style in an open dialogue can further give certainty (or doubt).
Despite its challenges, many teachers see AI detectors as a valuable resource. “I feel like it’s this deterrent that makes things more fair, because the more students that turn in academically honest work, the more level the playing field is in terms of grading”, said Julie Ippolito, an English teacher at Irvington High School.
As artificial intelligence continues to advance, schools are navigating the balance between embracing new technology, while still ensuring that students develop authentic, necessary literacy skills. For now, AI detectors are becoming an important part of that effort, helping teachers preserve academic honesty and progress, though one which requires a mindful usage.
