Men’s Lacrosse’s Momentum Gets Shut Down in Playoffs

By Nick Grados

The Irvington Men’s Varsity Lacrosse Team had a very successful regular season, finishing with a 12-4 record. In the last two games of the regular season, the team beat two of their best opponents all year, Nyack and Briarcliff.

On May 17th, the Men’s Lacrosse team travelled across the Hudson River to play the Nyack Red Hawks under the lights at 6pm. Even though this game had a lot of importance regarding seeding for playoffs, it was bigger than a game. The Irvington Men’s team was honored to play in the annual Red Bandana Games that Nyack hosts. It is a day where everyone honors the life of Wells Crowther, a man who saved the lives of many during the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Crowther ended up losing his life, while trying to save the lives of others. Crowther lived in Nyack and played lacrosse as a kid, so this game meant a lot to the community of Nyack. Once the heart-touching ceremony ended, a battle between two very talented teams began. After a very close first half, the Irvington Bulldog’s pulled away with the 14-9 victory on the back of Junior Captain Alex Zinman. Zinman finished with 6 goals and 1 assist, while going 65 percent from the faceoff x.

Following his great performance, Zinman said, “It was a true honor to play for Wells Crowther and I am very happy the boys were able to pull out this win.”

Next up was the Briarcliff Bears. The winner of this game would receive the 3 seed in the playoffs and a first round bye. The Bears came in very confident, yet they left in misery. This game went back and forth for the first three quarters. The score was 5-4 in favor of the Bulldogs going into the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs ended up pulling away with a 7-6 victory. The star of this game was the goalie Harrison Malakoff. He finished the game with 18 saves and kept the team in the game.

After his stellar game, Malakoff said, “It means a lot to me to help the team beat a powerhouse like Briarcliff.”

Unfortunately, the Bulldogs fell to Blind Brook on May 28th, ending their season. Although it was a loss, there were some stellar performances. Alex Zinman had 1 goal, 4 assists, 20 ground balls, and went 19 for 20 from the faceoff x. Also, Bowie Frank had 5 goals and 1 assists.

This team has a lot of potential in the future. They are only graduating three seniors and are returning lots of key players that will only grow better into next season.
