Who will be #1 after 72?

By Cormac Lyons

The grass has been cut, the grandstands set up, and the players and fans are ready. The 2025 Masters has just teed off. Several talented competitors will search for a championship at one of golf’s most significant events.

First on the tee- Bryson Dechambeau is a compelling contender to win the Green Jacket at Augusta National Golf Club. Known for his scientific approach to the game and impressive driving distance, DeChambeau has the potential to dominate Augusta’s lengthy par-5s, providing him with numerous birdie opportunities. His dedication to physical conditioning and innovative techniques could give him a strategic edge on the challenging course.

However, Dechambeau will face stiff competition from several top-tier golfers. Defending champion Scottie Scheffler enters the tournament in formidable form. Scheffler’s consistent performance, highlighted by his recent victories, including back-to-back titles at The Players Championship in 2023 and 2024, and his second Masters win in 2023, underscores his ability to excel under pressure. Additionally, Scheffler was last year’s tour champion. His exceptional iron play and calm demeanor make him the favorite at Augusta.

When asked about his prediction, Alex Shapiro, a senior, said, “The best players turn up in the biggest moments, and Scottie is the best player in the world.”

Rory McIlroy is another strong candidate, aiming to complete his career Grand Slam, including the US Open, PGA Championship, and British Open, with a Masters Victory. Rory has been red hot recently, a victory this weekend would be the cherry on top of his immaculate career. McIlroy has had some recent struggles in grand slam tournaments, as despite winning four between 2011-2014, he has not won a grand slam tournament since. That includes a devastating loss at the 2024 US Open, where McIlroy finished second, one stroke behind Dechambeau. However, recent wins at famous Pebble Beach and TPC Sawgrass demonstrate his readiness to contend. His experience and skill set position him as a serious threat.

Ryder Spino, a Junior, said “Rory is coming for that Green Jacket”, and cited his determination as the main justification.

John Rahm, the 2023 Masters champion, also remains a critical player to watch. Despite transitioning to the LIV Golf League and having limited appearances in traditional 72-hole events, as LIV has a 54-hole format, unlike most major tournaments, Rahm’s talent and past success at Augusta cannot be overlooked. His ability to perform on the big stage keeps him in the discussion.

Additionally, emerging talents like Sweden’s Ludvig Åberg, who finished as runner-up in the 2024 Masters during his major debut, and seasoned players such as Xander Schauffele and Brooks Koepka, bring depth to the field. Koepka’s proven championship pedigree and Schauffele’s consistent performances make them both viable contenders.

The talent in the field ensures a highly competitive tournament. The 2025 Masters Tournament promises to be an exciting showcase of golf’s elite, vying for one of the sport’s most prestigious titles.
