Lighting the Way: District Proposes Campus Improvements

By Max Baron

Recently, the Irvington Union Free School District (IUFSD) held a budget meeting to present plans, goals, and areas for improvement in school spending. Many proposals focus on enhancing facilities at Irvington High School, reflecting the town’s commitment to creating a more enjoyable and functional environment for all students.

One of the most exciting proposals discussed was the installation of permanent lights at Meszaros Field. While the district is still working through logistics and awaiting town approval, the addition of field lights would allow for more flexible scheduling of games and practices, especially during months with limited daylight. Evening games and events could become more common, boosting school spirit and making athletic activities more accessible.

Ben Weiss, an eleventh-grade soccer player, expressed his enthusiasm about the potential project, saying, “I really hope they end up installing permanent lights at Mez because it would be cool and more fun to play under.”

The proposed improvements would be funded through the Capital Reserve, a financial resource designated for large-scale expenditures. In addition to field lights, the district plans to replace the turf field, resurface the track, renovate bathrooms, and initiate improvements across all campuses within the IUFSD. These upgrades aim to enhance the safety, functionality, and overall experience of the school environment.

Voting on these spending plans is expected to take place on May 20th by the Budget/Board of Trustees. While the results of this vote will determine the feasibility of these projects, substantial planning and permitting will still be necessary before any changes become visible on campus.
