Campus locked down after threatening social media post

By Ruby Fieser

On March 10th, the Irvington high school and middle school campus were placed on lockdown due to a threat, later confirmed to come from a social media post.

“Today, March 10th at approximately 11:40 am, a concerning social media post was reported to our school administration.  The post contained a picture of a teenage student with a threatening caption,” stated an email to the community from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mara Ratesic.

Dr. Ratesic stated that the student was “quickly identified and subsequently questioned [by the Irvington Police Department], and it was determined that the student did not pose a threat to our schools.”

Starting fifth period, the lockdown in Irvington High and Middle School lasted around 30 minutes. Police entered classrooms during the sixth period to give the all clear to students and teachers in the classrooms. There was then a “hold-in-place” until the beginning of the seventh period. Simultaneously, the Main Street School and Dows Lane were placed in a lockout, where visitors were not permitted entry.

The situation was complicated by a fire alarm at 12:45pm triggered by a microwave in the science wing.

“A full evacuation was deemed unnecessary as it had the potential to cause more confusion,” Dr Ratesic said in the email.
