Fidget Toys in Classrooms?

By Zachary Krady

How does using fidget toys help students?

Sometimes, it can be difficult for students to sit in class for 40 minutes straight without getting distracted. However, there is a possible solution for this problem: fidget toys.

Fidget toys are small objects that are used for fidgeting and can be brought anywhere to use. Some examples of fidget toys include fidget spinners, fidget cubes, stress balls, pop-it toys, etc.

According to an article from the National Library of Medicine, fidget toys are proven to help people by improving concentration, relieving stress and anxiety, reducing fidgeting, and more. All of these could apply to anyone, especially a student who is struggling to concentrate in class.

Additionally, according to Kendra Cherry in an article from VeryWellMind, fidget toys are also proven to be very beneficial for any students that have sensory disorders, such as ADHD and ASD. These disorders cause students to have trouble focusing, listening, and paying attention. However, fidget toys can give these students a chance to give their hands something to do during class, which calms them down and authorizes the brain to focus on their particular task.

Freshman at Irvington High School, Lucas Shapiro, shares his thoughts on fidget toys saying, “they help me concentrate in class because they give me something to do instead of just zoning out and not being able to focus on the lesson.”

If you are having trouble focusing in class and think you could benefit from a fidget toy, purchasing one may be a solution for you.
