Lunch periods in Irvington schools are generally well distributed throughout the day. Despite this, many students cannot have an early lunch, stating how it prevents them from succeeding in class. An early lunch has proven to increase productivity and prevent students from experiencing hunger throughout the day.
Several students are in disagreement about the effects of an early lunch: some students find that an early lunch disturbs their morning routine while others believe that an early lunch allows them to complete their work.
Samuel Lee (9), who has lunch during the 4th period, voiced his approval of an early lunch, crediting it with easing his transition from middle school to high school. Lee stated, “If I ever forget to do my homework the night before, I can complete it during my lunch period.”
Despite several students in favor of early lunches, some students are struggling to find comfort later in the day. Owen Unter (9), states that his lunch period contains a “lack of high schoolers” and that the middle schoolers create an extremely “loud” environment.
Based on a survey conducted with freshmen, Dylan Sawhney and Aaron Strow ran a poll among freshman schools with a 4-period lunch. Based on the 10 people who were asked, 6/10 students were in favor of lunch before stressful classes. Those who had a later lunch time tended to be more tired and unmotivated for their classes later on.
As a high schooler who has just started freshman year, I believe that early lunches have helped me in many ways. Although late lunches come with benefits, I think that it has pushed me to be more social, get more work done, and overall improve my grades.
