VGS Midseason Review

By Massimo Ferrari

Halfway through the season and 5-4. The varsity girls team is getting hot at the right part of the season. Despite falling to some strong teams earlier in the season, VGS shut out Hastings at their homecoming despite the absence of keeper Cori Castellano. They then went on to edge out Bronxville in a very tight game this Thursday.

VGS has seen a complete reform in the defense following the senior departures of Amanda Berry and Jules Edelman. Senior Annie McFeetors and 8th-grader Lilah Velez have stepped up into a big role and have led the defense to several clean sheets already.

Captains Aly Raimondo, Syian Sawian, and Allie Cloutman have been incredible leaders to the team. Senior Allie Cloutman shouted out the shared support and collective growth among the team, stating “I love this team and we are learning to work well with each other.” All three captains have been long-serving members of VGS and alongside fellow senior Samara Vasishta have produced a majority of offense so far banging in goals for fun.

Juniors Maddie Okun, Leila Schneider, Federica Ricciardella, and Sophia Im have also stepped into big-game minutes this season. Collectively, they have filled in other holes caused by senior departures and have all been integral members of Coach DiBenedetto’s system.

With difficult games shortly such as Albertus Magnus, VGS is looking to continue to ride this hot streak as momentum to move up in the Class A rankings.

VGS is hosting Hastings on October 10th at 7 pm for their homecoming. Be sure to pop out and support them wearing your best USA fits!
