Music Genres at a Glance

In a survey I conducted as a part of The Paw Print, we asked students at IHS what their favorite genres of music are and why. Here is a bar graph of the results:

Let’s talk about each genre.

Pop:
As shown above, pop is the most popular genre of music with 32.2% of students at IHS choosing it as their favorite genre. But what is pop and what makes it so popular? Pop music is designed to be popular, it is filled with catchy melodies and rhythms you can hum along to. Some pop songs can be emotional ballads and some can be upbeat that you can dance to. There are many well known pop artists including Michael Jackson and Taylor Swift.

Rap/Hip Hop:
Rap/HipHop is the second most popular genre according to the results above, 29.0% of students at IHS choose rap/hip hop as their favorite music genre. Rap/HipHop music focuses on rhythm and wordplay. Some well known rap/hip hop artists include Eminem and Nicki Minaj.

Rock:
If you like strong energetic music, rock music is for you. 19.3% of students at IHS chose rock music as their favorite genre. Some popular rock songs include “Stairway to heaven” by Led Zeppelin and “Sweet child o’ mine” by Guns N’ Roses. There are a lot of different kinds of rock music, including folk rock, classic rock and hard rock to name a few. No matter what type of rock music you like, it’s always a good choice for an energetic music session.

Country:
Country music is great for relaxing and certain types of dancing. Characterized by fiddles, banjos, and acoustic guitars forming great ballads and dance tunes, country music creates a nice rustic feeling. According to the survey 6.4% of students at IHS choose country music as their favorite genre. Some popular country artists include Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson.

R&B:
R&B, or rhythm and blues music is a genre of music that originated in African-American communities in the 1940s. 6.4% of students at IHS put R&B as their favorite music genre. Some popular artists include SZA and Stevie Wonder.

Classical:
Classical music is defined by a period of time in which music was made. There are many different eras of classical music, including baroque and romance music. Classical music is known for the intense emotions it conveys, but classical music can also be used as a way to relax depending on your mood. So no matter how you’re feeling, classical music will have something for you. 4.8% of students at IHS put classical music as their favorite genre. Some famous classical music artists include Bach, Mozart, and Chopin.

Jazz:
Jazz is a type of music known for complex rhythms that create a unique style of music. While it can sometimes feel confusing, jazz can be enjoyable to listen to. Jazz is also known for improvisation, a type of music in which the player makes up a tune as they go. 1.6% of students at IHS put jazz as their favorite music genre. Some famous jazz artists include Charlie Parker, Benny Goodman, and Ella Fitzgerald.
