From a loss in the section final to consecutive early playoff exits, Irvington Varsity Boys Soccer is primed for a bounceback season. The Varsity Boys soccer team took part in an exhilarating preseason scrimmage against Westlake which they won 4 – 0. They followed this preseason clash with a controversial 1-0 defeat at the hands of Ardsley to start off the regular season. After the defeat the boys ventured away to Scarsdale in which they suffered a 7-1 loss to the state champions. A bounce back 5-0 win at Pelham re-energized the team as they look forward to the rest of their season.
A talented roster with experienced seniors and exciting youth has the boys soccer team excited for the remaining games, junior midfielder Alex Shevrin said “It’s going to be an exciting season, we’ve got a lot of tough games, but we have a talented team and I think we can win them.” Shevrin, off the back of a goal against Pelham emphasized his positivity regarding the future of this team and the direction they are heading under second year coach Chris Lombardi and first year assistant Brendan O’sullivan.
Additionally, senior captain Jonathan Guerrero explained that he is most looking forward to “just going out to eat.” The star center back expressed his optimism regarding the dynamic of the team, going on to say that “we’re friends first, then teammates.”
Looking forward, the Bulldogs have a rigorous schedule including two away homecoming at Hastings on September 20th, and against Eastchester on September 28th. The Bulldogs homecoming will be October 7th at 7 PM on Mezaros field against league rivals Albertus Magnus.
Led by their five senior captains, the Boys soccer team will continue to fight for every win as the 2024 season continues.
