On average children have been receiving phones in America starting at ages 8 years old. That means, more and more children have been getting extremely attached to this highly addictive product at such a young age.
Phones are highly addictive and extremely distracting, the average screen time for high school students is over 7 hours a day.
At Irvington Middle School, students are not permitted to use their phones at any time of the day, however once they transition to high school, students are allowed to use their phones.
There are two general perspectives on this rule within the high school. Around half of the teachers have taken the “phone hotel” approach in which as the students enter the classroom, the phones enter the pockets against the wall. However, on the other spectrum of this problem, teachers leave it to the students to decide how they will approach this situation.
This situation is extremely difficult to draw a complete conclusion from the two sides. Should students be given the independence to use their phones whenever they wish, or should ALL teachers hop on the “phone hotel” trend to help students focus more and completely take away the temptation as a whole?
