All good things eventually come to an end. This was true for the Irvington Fencing team after their last match in sectionals.
The Bulldogs had a successful season. Fencer John Clinton recaps his season, “Overall, the year has been fun. We lost some bouts and we won some as well”.
All players on the fencing team had a lot of fun this season, which is great for the team morale. A mix of competitiveness and high spirits is what makes a great season. This has been important for the evolution of the team, and it’s a great way to gain more members.
Michelle Zhou and Sophie Surguladze were all-section winners, which is a very impressive feat.
Camila Mercado, a sophomore, shares her favorite moment during the season. “I beat a very good opponent who was 5-0.” A big win for Mercado and the program as a whole.
When asked if she has any advice for people considering joining the team, she said,“If you want to build self-confidence, join the fencing team. Even though it is a team sport, there are one on one battles you can do that can show your hard work paying off.”
If fencing is something you are considering, it is highly recommended that you join. The team is a warm and friendly environment that you can’t really get anywhere else, as they finish their season with smiles.
