The boy’s basketball team ended its season in a disappointing, dramatic fashion on Wednesday, February 14th.
A play-in game against the 17th-seeded Nanuet team was the one thing holding the team back from a playoff run. At home the team fought through a competitive game with an eventual loss in the final seconds of overtime.
The game was back and forth from the tip-off and filled with big moments. Junior CJ Steinberg hit a massive three to send the game to overtime with momentum for the bulldogs. However, this short-lived burst of life couldn’t will the team to victory.
In an action-packed overtime period, the Bulldogs went neck and neck with Nanuet. In the final minute of play, a few costly turnovers were the difference between a playoff run and the end of the season. This unfortunate ending capped off an up-and-down season for the Bulldogs.
Ending with a record of 9-11, the dogs fought hard but weren’t quite able to achieve a .500 record. Junior Captain Jonny Guerrero says “Our season was underwhelming and it hurts to see our seniors go out that way. But this was a good experience for our juniors and freshmen. We will be working in the offseason and will bounce back strong next year”.
A disappointing season isn’t going to hold the team back from a bounce-back next year. Head coach Dave Boykin also looks forward to the offseason workouts that will lead into next season. He’s looking to finally turn the corner with this team and bring some playoff success to Irvington.
