On Thursday, February 1st, the night had finally come. The night where Coach Gina Maher would finally collect her 800th win with the Irvington Bulldogs Girls Basketball team.
The gym was packed with seemingly the entirety of the Irvington community, including excited students, parents, and former players who helped get many of those 800 wins. With each fan adding to the electric environment, it was clear there was no stopping the bulldogs that night.
The team got off to a blazing hot start, leading 20-0 at the end of the first quarter. The onslaught continued for the rest of the game with the Bulldogs maintaining this lead, dominating Eastchester 33-2 at halftime, and finally achieving that 800th win with a final score of 48-27.
Although it was clear this night was all about her, Gina Maher showed her humbleness and true dedication to her players and team with the quote “It’s not really about me, it’s about them and the program. I’m so lucky.”
Gina Maher began coaching the Irvington bulldogs almost 50 years ago in 1975. In this time she has led the girls basketball team to five federation championships, six state public school titles, and was even inducted into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame.
With this monumental achievement, it is clear that Gina Maher’s name will forever live on, being remembered as a legend in not just Irvington, but in the world of athletics as a whole. She is truly one of a kind, and we are incredibly proud and lucky to have her in our Irvington family.
