The Battle of the Buds: Apple vs. Beats

by Scarlett Downes

Every day, IHS students roam from class to class while remaining in their own little worlds thanks to their earbuds. Listening to music during school, whether it’s between classes or during class when permitted, brings students an unmatched comfort during the long and tiresome school day.

AirPods, the earbuds that Apple makes, have been extremely popular since they came out in 2016; however, the world of wireless earbuds is rapidly expanding. Apple is certainly not the only creator of high quality earbuds. In fact, there are many other great options out there that I think are equally as good, if not better than AirPods.

As a person who has used both AirPods and Beats Studio Buds (earbuds made by Beats), I have a strong preference for the Studio Buds.

First of all, the Beats are much more comfortable to wear. Unlike the standard AirPods where the buds are a hard, plastic material, the Beats come with three different sizes of soft silicone in-ear attachments. These attachments make the earbuds ten times more comfortable. Not to mention, the ability to adjust them to your perfect size makes them less prone to falling out of ears, which is a problem that I ran into consistently during my short lived AirPod era.

Ava Rubin, an IHS senior and avid Beats Studio Buds user, said “I brought them on a weekend ski trip and the battery lasted the entire time I was there. I even used them while I skied.”

This is just a testament to how well the earbuds really do stay in ears, while also still holding a great charge.

Rubin proceeded to say, “My beats studio buds have lasted longer than any other earbud/headphone I’ve ever had. The bright red color is one of my favorite parts.”

Do AirPods come in a variety of fun colors? I think not.

Last but not least, let’s talk about the noise cancellation feature, which Rubin also said is amazing. While there is a higher end model of AirPods that has this feature, they are significantly more expensive than the Beats. The standard and more affordable model of AirPods don’t even have this feature, making the Studio Buds a no-brainer.

When deciding on which earbuds to purchase, it ultimately depends on one’s willingness to break away from the norm. If you want to blend into the crowd while still having pretty good quality, I think AirPods are a great option! But if you don’t mind straying away from the majority and want stellar quality earbuds, the Beats Studio Buds would be a perfect choice.
