IHS Adds Exciting New Clubs

By Samuel Rimland

There are a plethora of new clubs that have recently been created by students of our IHS community. In particular, there is the Westchester Youth Congress chapter, Film club, and Book club, which have all been founded by juniors in our high school.

In addition to strengthening college resumes, clubs are an outlet for creativity and creating opportunities for students to learn more about topics that interest them. Each of the aforementioned clubs are reinforcing what it means to be a club by providing activities and opportunities that will be beneficial for the whole student body.

The Westchester Youth Congress chapter in IHS was founded by Jake Epple and Ben Kasoff. Jake mentioned that this is a branch of Westchester Youth Congress, which is a student-led organization that is focused on creating changes in the community by young leaders. The chapter is an opportunity for students to help their community while benefiting from the enrichment of others’ lives while also being able to earn community service hours. This gives incentive for people to join the club. Jake and Ben are already putting together projects and activities for students.

Sophia DeCecchis created the book club in Irvington High School. Her goal in creating the club was to create a community for lovers of reading to have a space to enjoy and talk about books they like. She wants to foster a good reading community in our school, and she already has ideas for programs. These include things such as “Secret Santa” and a book exchange with another school. The members of this club will be exposed to many new books, which will help stimulate their love for reading.

One of the most highly anticipated new clubs is the film club started by Elliot Riseman. He loves to film and create stories. Elliot even has a YouTube channel dedicated to short films, which contains many different series and filming styles. His mission is to provide a space for students interested in filmmaking. He wants there to be an outlet for students to work and develop their filmmaking skills. The members of this club will be able to learn by creating their own stories and having projects that will motivate and encourage them to do better.

Whether it is filming or reading there are many new clubs and opportunities for the students at IHS to be a part of. Be sure to check one of the new clubs out next club day.
