As the new school year of 2022-23 begins the IHS students and community welcome many new changes in the administration. In May of last year, Jon Hirsch was appointed as the IHS principal taking over Ms. GM’s former role. Additionally shortly after this Ms. DeFilippis resigned in August, Ms. Sara Rust was appointed as interim assistant principal.
Changes in the guidance department this summer include the appointment of Andrew Lund as Guidance Chairperson and the hiring of Laura Giordano as the new guidance counselor replacing Emily Colman.
Mr. Hirsch joins Irvington High School with deep knowledge of the area. He grew up nearby in Ardsley where he later became assistant principal of the Ardsley High School. Mr. Hirsch subsequently became principal of Valhalla high school where he continued to focus on providing rigorous learning opportunities simultaneously with meeting students’ emotional needs.
Ms. Rust is no stranger to the Irvington school community, having joined the district in 2015 as secondary instructional coach supporting both the middle and high school campuses. Additionally, Ms. Rust has been heavily involved with Irvington’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiative. Prior to joining Irvington, Ms. Rust was a NYC (English as a new language) teacher, science teacher and curriculum developer.
With the departure of Emily Colman, Andrew Lund will be the new Guidance Chairperson following his 15-year tenure as guidance counselor. Mr. Lund is well respected by his colleagues, students and parents and will bring a new perspective to this position.
Laura Giordano replaces the vacant guidance counselor position. Ms. Giordano’s experience started as a counselor at a suburban Boston high school and continued in New York City schools.
