For the past few months, the high school band has been studying body percussion. In short, body percussion is the art of making music through striking different parts of the body. Some examples of body percussion sounds include stomping, clapping, patting, and snapping.
In order to learn body percussion accurately and correctly, professional musician/performer Tamii Sakurai came in a few times to band class to teach the students. Sakurai is a body percussion specialist and is from the off-Broadway show Stomp.
Sophomore band student Becca Boritz said, “I learned a lot from Tamii about rhythm and sound.”
The band had been working on this body percussion piece for a few months, and finally finished and filmed it just recently.
Boritz said, “About once a month we added onto the basics, which were clapping and stomping.”
Check out the video below to see the hard work the band students have put in these past few months.
