Freshmen Takes Issues of Hunger and Homelessness Into Their Own Hands Through the Organization FoodShareJoy

by Harlan Flamm

It’s a sunny day on the Bowery in Manhattan. But there are many aspects of this place that aren’t as sunny. Bowery has one of the biggest homeless populations in the entire city. People who suffer from homelessness have very little choice in where they sleep or what they wear, much less what they eat. Therefore many homeless people don’t get proper nutrition.

Pondering these issues, freshman student council president Tane Kim decided to take action, starting a nonprofit organization FoodShareJoy. Together with a dedicated team of freshmen, the nonprofit startup took on a variety of tasks to help. the cause. Last summer, the organization prepared and distributed over 50 meals to the homeless in NYC. In addition, they raised over $600 for another great organization, Lifting up Westchester. This particular task was to help the homeless closer to home.

These past missions were impressive in their own right, but founder Tane Kim is not satisfied just yet. “We need to expand our horizons in order to keep increasing our impact,”he said in an interview with The Paw Print. Unfortunately, his ambition will not be enough to truly grow the organization and its impact. Donations are what is urgently needed for the growing nonprofit. All the money will go straight into buying the ingredients among other costs needed for upcoming runs.
