Despite the late start of fencing, its season has officially begun. The arrival of Coach Kunz excites the team as they prepare for their season.
Irvington commenced their season on Saturday, January 15th with their first tournament. The team had a close match against Ardsley, along with a victory for the girls’ epi and foil team over Our Lady of Lourdes.
As coach of the fencing team, Kunz shares his passion for the sport and how he hopes to grow fencing within Irvington’s community, “I’m excited to support and grow the sport in a setting that makes it accessible to a wider audience. Fencing isn’t usually offered in schools and is typically thought of as sort of an elitist sport,” says Kunz.
Expanding Irvington’s fencing team can change this perception of the sport. As a former saber coach, Coach Kunz also mentions his hopes of having the opportunity to start a saber team.
Along with practicing and competing, Kunz hopes the team will expand their passion for the sport outside of school.
“I would like to get our fencers interested in pursuing the sport even outside of our practices and meets. It would be awesome to take a look at some local competitions hosted by some fencing clubs and see some Irvington names on the competitor lists”, says Kunz.
Kunz expresses his desire to help improve the team’s skills while expanding the sport beyond Irvington’s team. Boys and girls, epi, and foil continue to compete during their season, with an upcoming competition this Saturday.
