The long awaited Boston Marathon, which was moved from April to October this year, was a particularly meaningful race due to the year and a half delay from the coronavirus pandemic.
The 125th Boston Marathon, which started in 1897, took place on Monday, October 11th with about 20,000 entrants participating in person, and nearly the same amount participating virtually.
The mens winner was Benson Kipruto from Kenya with an outstanding time of 02:09:51. Kipruto is 30 years old, and was the winner of other races such as the 2021 Prague Marathon, as well as the 2018 Toronto Marathon.
The womens winner was Diana Kipyokei from Kenya who also had a very impressive time of 02:24:45. Kipyokei is 27 years old and previously won the Istanbul Marathon back in 2020.
In the para athletics division, the women’s winner was 44 year old Misato Michishita, from Japan. Michishita had a time of 03:08:14, and won a silver medal in the 2016 summer paralympics in Rio. The mens winner was Chaz Davis from Massachusetts, who had a time of 02:46:52. Both of these athletes have vision impairment.
Despite the long delay, the 2021 Boston Marathon was an overall success, and runners and organizers look forward to next year’s race.
