IHS’s great homecoming weekend hit a massive roadblock today when it was announced that Saturday night’s main event — the Bulldog’s football game under the lights of Meszaros Field — was canceled due to a developing COVID-related situation with Irvington’s opponents Poughkeepsie.
Details are still emerging but players were informed of the decision during a meeting 3rd period today. The cancellation of the game puts a bit of a damper on the planned homecoming pep rally this afternoon at the recently refurbished Meszaros Field on the newly installed bleachers.
Sophomore football player David DeCecchis confirmed that the team was told Poughkeepsie was exposed to COVID and that the game was cancelled. Senior Michael D’Alessio said that the team meeting was quiet and players were visibly upset during the meeting.
According to senior Lucas Monness there was no talk about the game being rescheduled as of right now, but this could certainly change in the future.
There was some talk among students of possibly replacing the football’s night game slot with another team, but as of press time, no rescheduling has been confirmed.
The homecoming game attracts many fans, both students and alumni, every year, and was expected to mark a bit of a return to normal after the COVID-marred season last year that saw football moved to the Spring and few fans in attendance.
