Orchestra Ensemble to Play at Graduation

By Reinesse Wong

Members of the Irvington High School Orchestra are playing music for the Irvington’s graduation ceremony to be held at Scenic Hudson park organized by the orchestra director Michael Calvaresi.

While the pandemic has thrown IHS out of its usual activities, graduation is an event that has retained some semblance of normalcy. Hence, there will be in-person music played by the orchestra members as an effort to stick to tradition similar to past years. However, the graduation ceremony for seniors this year will be quite different this year. For example, there will be a limited number of family and friends who are allowed to attend. Graduating seniors can only bring two guests and they must show proof of vaccination or be tested before arrival.

The members playing in the ensemble include Andrew Zhou (violin), Evan Kuo (Violin), Reinesse Wong (violin), Liam Sawian (Cello), Seungchan Yun (Cello), Jason Ahn (Viola), and Ryan Liu (Bass). The repertoire of music will include songs like “Canon in D”, “Trumpet Voluntary”, “Pomp and Circumstance”, and “Ode to Joy.”

Michael Calvaresi, the Orchestra director has voiced his excitement to lead the chamber group.

Even though it isn’t a traditional concert, he is excited that the orchestra will be performing again.

“This was an event I never thought would be possible due to the pandemic, and I am very encouraged by all of the restrictions that are being lifted from day to day. It really seems like things are on the verge of feeling normal again!”
