Cleary Reaches 100th Goal on VGL

By Elise Harcsar

In the most recent varsity girls lacrosse victory against Vahalla with a score of 9-8, Senior Captain Áine Cleary reached a career milestone of 100 goals.

She scored a total of three goals during the game, and scored her 100th goal unassisted.

Cleary is a multisport athlete and is involved both inside and outside of school with competitive teams. She has been playing on Snipers Elite Lacrosse for three years and club for four years. She also holds a leadership position as a captain on all three varsity teams — lacrosse, soccer, and basketball.

Being a competitive, multi-sport athlete has given her more experience as a talented lacrosse player and she will continue her lacrosse career next fall at Hamilton College.

“Other sports have helped me more than anything else. Not only are a lot of the movements the same across all sports, but just being on different teams has taught me so much about sportsmanship and working with others,” said Cleary.

When asked about influences as an underclassman, Cleary mentioned Olivia Valdes and Mia Mascone, both of whom were role models and helped inspire her growth as a lacrosse player.

She also shares her most memorable moment playing on the team, which was during an overtime win against Putnam Valley.

“My most memorable moment on the team in high school would probably be our overtime win against Putnam Valley earlier this season. It was a really great game, the energy of the team was really high and it was a good win.”

Although Cleary has left her mark at Irvington, she is excited to play at the collegiate level.

“I’m really excited to play next year in college and to play at a higher level. The game is so much more fast paced and I’m really looking forward to getting better and playing with amazing girls.”
