COVID-19 did not permit the Spring Visual Arts Show that is typically held by the art department, so a virtual presentation showcasing art from middle and high school art students has been created. The presentation is divided by class, and allows the viewer to see photos of their artwork along with the name of the artist.
COVID has affected the way students have created art this year not only through their applications but also through the topics that they focused on.
“Across the board, students have made more emotional and intense artwork,” IHS art teacher Ms. Schmertz stated. “They were able to focus in a way not possible when you are making art in a public space. For some students it was a real struggle to learn to make physical work when they are not physically present.”
Although Ms. Schmertz stated that art is “always better in person,” she was proud to be able to showcase the hard work that her students have been focusing on throughout such an unusual year.
Studio Art student Josie Dring was also happy to see her work on display.
“This was my first art class I’ve taken at IHS, so I’m not sure what a typical year would have looked like. Regardless, my class has been working diligently all year to create our final projects and being able to showcase them to the larger community has felt very rewarding.”
