Just this past weekend, our winter track team finally got the opportunity to perform on the big stage and attend a Section 1 winter track meet; however, this year’s meet looked a little different.
Similar to many other sports, Irvington’s winter track team has faced many setbacks this season stemming from NYSPHSAA health regulations for winter sports, the number one problem being finding a place to compete with other Section 1 programs in the form of official meets. With the inability to bring the entire winter track team to the Armory, where our program typically competes, problems arose and winter track meets were scarce.
Aside from the one meet Irvington was able to hold earlier in the season against Rivertown rival Hastings, our Bulldogs, as well as the majority of Section 1 winter track programs struggled immensely to find a way for these athletes to compete.
That is, until an unusual opportunity came up for these track programs to compete in the parking garage of the well-known Palisades Mall. Yes, you read that correctly. This past weekend, our varsity winter track teams finally got a chance to compete right below where many of the members of our Irvington community typically go shopping.
Coach Barry and company were able to make the most of this meet, as the girls varsity 4×300 meter relay placed first with an impressive school-record time of 3 minutes and 13.25 seconds (3:13.25.).
In addition, our varsity boys 4×600 meter team came in a close-second to an exceptional Somers opponent after a long, obstacle-filled season. In a year filled with all types of unusual changes, our Bulldogs were able to make the most of this one and cap off an extremely successful season and finally get back to competition.
