Jamie Kimura, senior at Irvington High School has earned a spot to showcase her photo in the Drexel University’s Photography Context.
The Drexel Photography contest is hosted by Drexel University, a private research university in Pennsylvania. In its 20th annual contest, they received over 2100 photos from 39 states and accepted 267 of them into the show. Jamie’s photograph, titled “Light”, was accepted as one of the 267 photographs to be showcased.
“I submitted three photos, and my photo ‘Light’ happened to be the one they picked to be showcased. I had taken it during the past summer when I was starting to get into film. It happened to be a sunny afternoon, and I had walked into one of my rooms in my house where the curtains were blowing and the sun was shining through. It looked beautiful, so I decided to take a photo of it on 35 mm film on my film camera. It was a spontaneous moment, but I’m glad I caught it because it came out beautifully. Film was the best tool to use to capture this kind of texture and feeling, as it created a soft light and a contrast between the highlights and shadows.”
Kimura has also taken many summer programs on photography and film courses at the Fashion Institute of Technology and the New School. She has plans to continue photography in college.
“I do hope to continue taking photos through college and beyond because I want to improve my technique and get into different modes of photography (such as exploring film more). Right now, I’m focused on getting better at taking portraits, but I hope to expand into different areas of photography soon.”
