Newly-elected Representative Mondaire Jones of New York’s 17th District, which contains much of Westchester and Rockland, expressed support Wednesday for the immediate removal of President Trump from office, either via the 25th Amendment or impeachment.
He also said he would co-sponsor a resolution from Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) calling for the expulsion of House members who “violated their oath of office” by objecting to the certification of the Electoral College vote.
Jones’s statements came hours after a Trump-incited mob stormed the Capitol to halt certification, overwhelming police and triggering an evacuation of both Houses of Congress. Shortly after he reached a secure location, Jones sent out a series of Tweets confirming his safety and addressing the situation.
Then, throughout the afternoon and evening, Jones announced his support for a number of measures aimed at curtailing Trump and his allies. Jones first announced his support of a second impeachment of the President just after 3:20 pm, declaring in a Tweet that, “Donald Trump has incited violence against the legislative branch of the United States Government.”
Later in the afternoon, Jones announced that he would join Bush’s resolution, called for Sen. Josh Hawley to resign, signed a letter asking Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment, and supported legislation to end partisan gerrymandering.
Around 11pm, Jones issued a statement reiterating many of these positions and urging colleagues to follow suite, asserting that “the fate of our Republic is on the line.”
Finally, at 3:05 am, Jones Tweeted that he had cast his vote to certify the election results. “Tomorrow, the fight for democracy begins anew. Tonight, I’m going to get some sleep,” he said, marking the end of a chaotic and historic 4th day in office.
