Election Night: What to Watch, Who to Follow?

By Alex Schochet

Today is election day and if you are wondering where to go to watch the results trickle in, there are several different TV channels from which to choose.

Every major channel: Fox, CBS, NBC, and ABC will have a prime time program for the election. Cable news outlet, such as MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News, will broadcast from the polls all day long as well.

MSNBC’s coverage, headlined by Brian Williams, also features election data guru Steve Kornacki, who breaks down all of the results, county-by-county as they come in.

Some will flock to social media, like Twitter, but be wary of misinformation. Two accounts that provide solid election data analysis are Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict), and Nate Cohen (@Nate-Cohen).

Dave Wasserman works for Cook Political Report and is highly regarded in the political analysis field. He will have great updates on election night as the data returns. Nate Cohen is also well-known in the political analysis field, as he works for The New York Times.

Speaking of The New York Times, the Times will once again feature The New York Times Needle. The needle analyzes incomplete results to show who is on track to win the presidential election. But keep in mind, that it is a an estimate based on reported data and that can sometimes make for some dramatic shifts as data comes in (as it did in 2016).
