‘We Clap Because We Care’

By Sydney Birkhahn

In the midst of this pandemic, it can feel a little bleak and hopeless at times, but there are reminders of the goodness of the human spirit if you know where to look (and listen).

Every night at 7pm in New York City and around the world people are coming out of their homes to clap and cheer on healthcare workers, first responders and other frontline workers for the tireless work they’ve been doing during the pandemic.

These frontline workers are putting their lives on the line every single day in order to help others and to take care of the people suffering with COVID-19. They are being called the “heroes” of this pandemic.

Other acts of kindness can be seen during this pandemic as well. One new news site that has been bringing smiles to people’s faces has been actor John Krasinski’s “good news” broadcasts, titled “Some Good News.” For several weeks, Krasinski (better known as “Jim” from The Office) has been hosting 20-minute YouTube videos which focus on feel-good stories and positive news.

One last example of an act of kindness seen around our community and all over is the new and improved way of celebrating birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, and more. Lately, the new way to celebrate has been a “drive by” where people drive past someone’s house honking their horns and cheering as a way to celebrate while also social distancing.

Even though our world has seen what we’ve never imagined in these past few months, it is clear that people have still found safe ways to make others smile.
