In his daily briefing today, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that New York schools will be closed for another two weeks until April 15, and said that they will reassess again at that time.
“I believe the schools should remain closed,” Gov. Cuomo said. “I don’t do this joyfully, but you look at where we are, I believe the schools should remain closed.”
In a message to the community, Irvington superintendent Kris Harrison relayed the governor’s message, but added that IUFSD still plans to continue with the scheduled Spring Break, April 6th-13th.
“Just a short time ago, Governor Cuomo announced that schools will remain closed for another two weeks and, as of now, will reopen on April 15th. Therefore, the Irvington schools will continue to support distance learning throughout the closure. However, please note that the scheduled Spring Break, April 6th-13th, will be an instruction-free period with no distance learning, as it is a contractual break for District employees. Teaching and learning will resume following Spring Break on Tuesday, April 14th.”
The original order for school closure was due to expire on April 1, but the number of cases of COVID-19 in New York has skyrocketed in recent week.
According to Johns Hopkins University, Westchester county has 5,944 cases and one death; Rockland 1,197 and seven deaths and NYC, which saw numbers jump significantly in recent days, has 23,112 and 365 deaths. The United States currently has 86, 012 cases, more than any other nation, and 1,301 deaths.
