Schools Begin Transition to Online Instruction

By Dani Heller

As of Wednesday, the Irvington community has begun its two weeks of home-based learning.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer declared the closure of schools in Westchester for 14 days in hopes to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

From March 18th to March 24th, work posted by teachers via Google Classroom will be given to students in order to maintain their current knowledge. Beginning on March 25th, new material will be taught to students through means of online resources, in which the faculty is currently being trained.

In the email from superintendent Dr. Kris Harrison officially announcing the two-week closure, he states that “families should prepare for the potential of longer school closures.”

“On Wednesday, March 25th, instruction in new material may begin via a more comprehensive learn-from-home approach. On this date, we are planning to shift from maintaining learning to moving students forward with the established curriculum,” the letter states.

“Attendance will be tracked through participation and completion of assignments. Specific information about accessing these lessons will be provided by each building in advance of March 25th.”

IHS junior Josh Aronson, a co-manager of the coronavirus tracking website, said, “there is a real possibility we are closed past Spring Break. However, the timing of the school reopening is dependent on when this virus peaks, and when it plateaus.”

Yesterday, a follow up message was sent that reminded students of the importance of social distancing, in order to prevent the further spread of COVID-19.

Due to the reported congregation of students on school property, Irvington school district fields, playgrounds, and the track are now closed.
