IHS’s Best in Music 2019

By Anton Dedvukaj

As 2019 wraps up, many “favorites of 2019” lists are being posted on various online and print publications, blogs, and videos. One of the most discussed subject in these lists is, in fact, music.

This year was a very diverse year for music. Rap and pop continued to dominate the landscape, but genres like country also saw more success than usual. In a world where streaming and other user-based formats rule the charts more than ever before, this was quite a sight to see.

So, The Paw Print were curious to see what songs and albums were the favorites here at IHS. We accumulated many responses, and here are the results:

SONG OF THE YEAR

When it comes to songs, Irvington respondents decided that the honor would go to Post Malone and Swae Lee’s pop-rap team-up on the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse soundtrack for the track “Sunflower”. Closely following was Billie Eilish’s alternative pop-trap fusion “Bad Guy”, and tied for third was “Shallow” by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper from the A Star is Born soundtrack and Lil Nas X & Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Old Town Road”.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR

As for album of the year, the honor handily went to Billie Eilish’s debut album, WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? Then Khalid’s latest album Free Spirit coming in second, and lastly Post Malone’s Hollywood’s Bleeding in third.

ARTISTS OF THE YEAR

The third category was artist of the year, which went to Travis Scott. Billie Eilish followed closely in second and Post Malone placed third. Best new artist was Billie Eilish, winning by a vast majority.

Overall, the music tastes of Irvington were quite diverse, and while it is possible to pin down trends in today’s most popular music, it is clear that IHS’s tastes vary quite a bit from person to person, and this is evidently presented through their choices of what music defined the year of 2019.
