As the weather begins to cool winter sports are beginning, and the boys winter track team is coming in strong this season, as one of Irvington’s premier sports teams.
After finishing as league champs and runners up to the sectional title last year, the coaches hope to continue the teams winning streak and claim the sectional title for the first time in 38 years.
This season the coaches believe the team is in a unique position to do so as the roster is filled with dozens of talented athletes. Although the team lost many valuable members of their leadership in the seniors who graduated last year, like Eric Park and Kent Hoyiama, the coaches feels confident in the ability of the current juniors and seniors to pick up the slack.
Among these juniors are Max Forte, Juanna Schizmu, Nick Levin, Brett Clinton, Aiden Mc’Clure, Nick Papanou Henry Demerest and Alex Biorgvisen. With such a large pool of talent the team is expected to dominate fields like hurdling, jumping, and distance (featuring one of the top Section One distance teams).
However the team isn’t only comprised of juniors, many talented freshmen and sophomores from Cross Country are coming over like Ryan Karring and Liam Lyons who are certain to improve the teams chances at the sectional title, adding further depth and versatility to the team this year.
With such a strong basis in both upper and underclassmen, the team is going into the season with strong ability to perform considerably in all of their fields.
“I feel really confident that sophomores who are now juniors are ready to step up and take leadership roles,” said coach Mr. Barry.
