Last Saturday, the varsity football team had their first game, and then a fundraiser on Sunday at the Irvington Farmers Market.
The game was against Hastings, and it was a win for the bulldogs. The score was 34-14. Touchdowns were scored by Paul Galano, Ian Schawam, Micheal Brennen, and Trevor Annicharico.
Ryan Kelly, a senior captain of the team was overjoyed about the successful game.
“It was a great team win, and we want to use this win to propel us in the direction of a winning season.”
The fundraiser on Sunday went just as well. The team had a “Fill the Helmet” drive, collecting money in their helmets to fund the team and to build the football program. Additionally, the team tossed a ball around with younger Bulldogs that came to the drive, and younger siblings of the varsity Bulldogs that came to support the team. The drive raised almost $700 dollars.
Ian Schwam, a junior who plays center for the team raved about the experience.
“We raised a lot of money for our team and got to talk about and play football with the younger bulldogs, which is always a treat,” he said
Seeing the future varsity players was a very unique experience for the Bulldogs. As the majority of the team are juniors and seniors, and will be graduating in the next few years, seeing who will be taking over the team was an interesting day for the them.
