On Saturday, June 1st, the sophomore science research class participated in their first competition at Westlake High School. After studying their specific scientific subjects for the entire school year, they finally were able to present and share their work with others.
The students had to formally present their research to four different judges. The competitors were assessed based off of the appearance of their research board and how eloquently they explained their topic. Afterwards, the students had to answer questions prompted by visitors.
Nearly three hundred students throughout Westchester competed in one of the following topics: behavioral science, environmental science, cellular and molecular biology, computer science, medicine and health, animal science, microbiology or plant science. The Irvington students did extremely well and many received top awards.
This competition was a great introduction to the many upcoming events which will occur over the course of their three year science research program.
First place microbiology winner Noah Yin said, “I worked hard throughout the year and it all paid off with the help of Mrs. Parikka.”
The sophomores who placed in the competition are as followed:
Eesha Thaker – 3rd place in Environmental Science
Nicholas Levin- 3rd place in Cellular and Molecular Biology
Henry Demarest – 3rd place in Computer Science
