Irvington’s very own Evan Panjwani was nominated for Lohud’s “Baseball Player of the Week” earlier last month. He earned his spot on the list of nominations by contributing significantly to the success of his team this season.
“When I found out that I was nominated as player of the week, I was ecstatic to be representing myself and Irvington baseball as a team to show how far we came this season,” said junior Panjwani.
He was nominated especially for his efforts to sustain his team as they played against Dobbs Ferry on Saturday, taking part in the Section I tournament in the class B out bracket round.
“The candidates this week were chosen based on games reported to lohud.com from Monday, May 13 to Sunday, May 19,” said the Lohud Baseball Blog.
Panjwani was nominated along with nine other players from Iona Prep, Blind Brook, Horace Greeley, Hastings, Byram Hills, Putnam Valley, Harvey, and John Jay-Cross River.
Panjwani struck out 14 which helped Irvington take the win against Dobbs Ferry, 7-2.
Now that the baseball season is over, Panjwani looks back on his successes and experiences.
“Many people doubted our team coming into the season, as we lost six starting seniors to graduation last year. However, we faced adversity and made a real strong run by winning a sectional game in the first round.”
Panjwani’s favorite moments of the season were during the game against Dobbs Ferry, striking out 14 of Dobbs Ferry’s batters, and, “celebrating with the boys.”
“Couldn’t have asked for a better group of guys to do it with.”
