The Egg That Broke the Internet

The most liked picture on Instagram is an egg. World_record_egg took over Instagram the first week of 2019, becoming the most liked picture on Instagram.

The post shows a brown egg with a caption “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this,” the post surpassed her record in two weeks, which Kylie Jenner then posted a video where she says “take that little egg” then cracks an egg onto the pavement.

The Egg currently has 53.2 million likes, and 3.1 million comments with 9.8 million followers. But recently, the egg had started to crack, and eventually, the_world_record_egg released a video with it cracking because of the pressure of social media is affecting its mental health.

“The pressure of social media is getting to you, if your struggling too, talk to someone, we got this.”

Then it shows a link to their website: talkingegg.info. When you follow this link, it shows all the different countries, and worldwide hotlines, like suicide prevention lines, therapy finders, and other links such as those to the Mental Health America, NAMI, and other links depending on what country you live in.

The creator of world_record_egg, Chris Godfrey, a 29-year-old advertising creative who works at the & Partnership in London, explains that he choose an egg because “an egg has no gender, race or religion. An egg is an egg. It’s universal.”

He also invited two of his friends to help him with the account, one of them is a 26 year old Alissa Khan-Whelan.

“People have fallen in love with this egg, and Eugene the egg wants to continue to spread positive messages.”

Will the famous Instagram Egg represent more than just an egg in the future? Only time will tell.
