by Samantha Ferisin

Saturday night, December 2nd, is one for the record books for Irvington basketball!

Coach Gina Maher led the girls basketball team to a win over White Plains in the Championship game of the William Warnock Tournament 65-50, thereby securing for her 700th career win.

Grace Thybulle recalls her favorite moment with Coach Maher, “when I was in sixth grade I was playing basketball on one of our free periods in gym and I was the only girl playing and she came in to talk to Ms.Becker but she saw me playing and cheered me on. After we had finished the game she came up to me and I was completely starstruck and we talked about basketball. She then asked me if I wanted to play summer league with the high school team and I was overjoyed and thought it was the coolest thing ever. I have always been thankful for her ability to see potential and I am so thankful to be apart of this beautiful family she has created.” Grace’s love and respect for Coach Maher’s has made this achievement even more valuable to her, “We’ve won that tournament now for nine years in a row and it was really satisfying that the championship game was also her 700th win. She is the most amazing coach and we are so  blessed that we get to be in her presence. She does so much for us and we are thankful that we could do this for her.

“Congratulations to Gina Maher for her 700th career win as coach of the Girls Basketball Team,” wrote Principal Cohen in his Monday message. “It is such an honor to work with Gina and to know that her incredible influence has such a positive impact on our entire community.  I know I am not alone when I say that I am in awe of her and feel so fortunate to call Gina a colleague.”
